Project 1a: Drawing

For this project I am tasked with exploring the sketchbooks of many artists and understanding what and how they make their sketchbooks both interesting and unique. I am to also do observational drawings based on still life, such as books, drawers etc.

Sketchbook Research

Paul Heaston:

Paul Heaston is an artist who specialises in using perspective in his sketchbook work. Although his focus his completely based on five-point perspective, each one of his drawings feels unique and brings the surroundings to life; seeing the world from his perspective. His choice of medium is pen and ink, however, he also combines each kind of ink technique and incorporates them into his pieces. From the different colour of the paper, to using different amounts of ink with water to control tone, every piece demonstrates his perspective, for us to see his world.

Maxwell Tilse

Maxwell Tilse is an illustrator who primarily uses ink to create his vast amount of art pieces. He also uses a combination of ink and coloured markers, drawing buildings and popular landmarks all over Europe. Although some of his work is not entirely realistic, as it contains fictional scenarios (e.g. a giant tiger in the middle of the street), most of his other work is comprised of his inking techniques and demonstrates his knowledge on perspective. Each of his pieces in his sketchbooks are unique in their own right, and are a wonder to behold.

Musa Balan

Musla Balan is an artist who specialises in urban sketching, mainly using watercolour to create each of his pieces. He applies the basic knowledge and understanding of perspective and explore the light and shadow of each drawing, using the flow and weight of the watercolours. His profession is urban sketching, so his main focus is drawing on location in cities, towns etc. He does not focus entirely on the absolute tiny details. Although his drawings include details, the whole purpose of his pieces in his sketchbooks are to show form and atmopsphere.
