Research Page

Over the summer break I will be researching different areas of illustration I consider interesting and could possibly insert into my future. This research will help me discover new aspects of the art styles I look at and how I can improve my skills as an illustrator.

Artist Research:

kelvin_trainerk and vincent.anthonyy:
These two digital artists both design and create art pieces based on one of the most popular franchises in the world: Pokemon. What I love about their artwork is that while they both work on the same franchise, their artwork is quite easily distinguishable from each other. Kelvin’s work feels more inspired by the current artwork of Pokemon by keeping some elements in his work, such as strong highlights and incorporating more of a dramatic, anime stylisation. Vincent’s work however takes a somewhat more realistic approach to his work. Each of his pieces feel more incorporated into the real world, but also reflects the atmosphere behind the specific type of Pokemon being drawn.

I admire the use of perspective to bring forth the sense of scale and dramatic angles. The use of colours make the pieces more vibrant and bring out more of the desired atmosphere to reflect the characters of the Pokemon. I also admire the use of landscape, to allow the drawings to feel more dimensional and further add to the atmosphere. I would like to gain a better understanding on these aspects in my work to better improve as an illustrator.
philipsue_art:
Philip is a digital artist who work is primarily focused on landscapes in both a fantasy and real world aspect. Each piece feels immersive and vibrant, delving deep into the atmosphere and focusing on the background.

What I admire about his work is that his style has a sort of paint-like quality, bringing forth texture into his work. While some of his work does not have a dynamic angle, he makes up for by adding depth into this artwork. Landscaping is something I typically struggle with but is something I want to improve.

derekdomnicdsouza:
Derek is a digital artist who’s work is primarily focused on landscape, but also keeps a balanced focus on the foreground as well. Like the previous artist, while some of his work does not incorporate dynamic angles, he makes up for it by adding depth. Derek’s style also feels smooth to reflect a relaxing feeling to his work, adding little details of texture when he needs to. His character also feels more incorporated to the scene he depicts, making the piece feel more personal.

I admire the use of depth and focus in his work, but also how dramatic each of his pieces depict. His control of lighting feels very comfortable and relaxing, which is something I would like to work on in my landscape practice.
mangaka_ody:
Odysseas is a manga artist who focuses on the horror genre, reflecting the horrifying atmosphere and the terror of his alien creatures. Each manga panel feels very dramatic and dangerous, further reinforcing the horrific nature of his theme.

What I admire most is the sheer emotion brought forth in his characters. His alien creatures feel very terrifying and the vast bursts of exaggerated emotion of the human characters feels very powerful. I want to work on the design of manga characters but also work on the control of tone as well.
sys_ain115:
Ariu is an artist who creates manga-like illustrations. What catches my eye in the art pieces is the simplicity of the colours but also how textured the pieces look. Each one is made digitally but is made to look traditional. I feel Airu’s work is inspired by some forms of traditional Japanese artwork, but including a manga style character and adding drama into the piece.

I would like to attempt to expand my view on manga drawings by not only approaching the drawings in a simple way but also add the impression of traditional art with paper textures.
0jae0_art:
This artist is a comic artist. But what I like most about her work is that she shows more of the process work more than the final outcome. It also feels inspiring and helpful to learn to trust the process of the piece you create. Her artwork feels very emotional, through the drawings of the facial structure and the use of scratchy lines.

What I would like to take away from this is to learn to trust the process better and only put a piece of work out when I find it acceptable. I also want to understand how to use tone through digital editing.
